How it's calculated

The rates come from the European Central Bank, which fixes them once every business day around 4:00 p.m. and publishes them shortly after. That's why weekends and holidays show the rate from the last business day — and the date of that day is always shown under the result.

All rates are quoted against the euro. For a pair that doesn't include the euro, like the dollar against the pound, we derive the rate by routing both through the euro. Banks do the same, which is why the result may differ slightly from a rate quoted directly for that pair.

These are reference rates, intended for statistics and accounting. Your bank, exchange office, or card will give you a different rate, usually worse, because it includes their margin.

Example

€1,000 at the ECB's reference rate of about $1.17 per euro comes to roughly $1,170. At an exchange office you'd get a few dollars less — that difference is their profit.

Frequently asked questions

Why does the rate here differ from my bank's?
Because this is the ECB's reference rate, not a trading quote. Your bank adds its own margin on top, and cards tack on transaction fees too. Use this as a benchmark to see how much you're paying above the official rate.
Why does the weekend show Friday's date?
Because the ECB only fixes rates on business days. There's no reference rate for Saturday. Rather than inventing one, we show the last real fix and its date.
How is a pair without the euro, like USD/GBP, calculated?
Through the euro: we divide the pound-to-euro rate by the dollar-to-euro rate. If either is missing for that day, we don't return a result rather than using a rate from another day.
